Drag Race superstar Trixie Mattel has never been one-dimensional. From music to cosmetics and everything in between, her mark on pop culture remains both consistent and innovative. While her foray into remodeling may come as a surprise to some, her new series ‘Trixie Motel’ on Discovery Plus proves that her crusading personality and creativity make her the perfect candidate for the future of televised design.
An expert blend of reality and renovation, ‘Trixie Motel’ follows Trixie and her well-rounded team as they transform a run-down Palm Springs motel into a jaw-dropping luxury oasis in just four months.
The space features seven rooms, all with distinct, fun-loving themes designed by LA-based designer, Dani Dazey. From the very first suite to the lobby, Dani’s colorful approach to styling and Trixie’s drenched-in-drag vision work together to create a one-of-a-kind destination that design-savvy vacationers will love.
“It was a jam-packed, wild experience with the highest highs and the lowest lows,” Dani says. “But in the end, it was so worth it. We are so proud of the show and the spaces we created.”
The individual rooms were modeled after Trixie’s most-popular quotes or milestones in her career: Pink Flamingo, Queen of Hearts, Yeehaw Cowgirl, Atomic Bombshell, Flower Power, Malibu Barbara, and Oh Honeymoon.
“It was so much fun to go fully on-theme and make the most out of it,” Dani says. “I really took all the details to heart. I wanted to tie in the tiniest things—the drawer pulls, accessories, and tile pattern.”
The first of the Trixie Motel rooms completed was the Pink Flamingo suite, which features custom walls, vintage-inspired silhouettes, and bright, eye-catching colors.
“So much work went into that room,” Dani says. “And that was the first room Trixie got to see and react to, so I have a sentimental attachment to it.”
“It was like, ‘If we can do this one this grand and awesome, it’ll set the tone for everything else,’” Dani’s husband and business partner, Phillip, adds.
Another fan favorite is the Flower Power suite. Decked out in floor-to-ceiling 70s motifs, this space truly catapults you back in time. Along with the other suites, this impressive room comes complete with a wet bar that is perfect for making cocktails and relaxing.
“We really focused on creating counter space and making a cute, little bar set up,” Dani recalls. “From the small, brass sinks to the faucets, it’s really beautiful and all you really need for a weekend vacation to make drinks and entertain.”
Across the board, Dani and her team zeroed in on how each area would be used. With limited square footage, she made sacrifices while keeping potential guests at the forefront of her plan. For example, instead of closets, Dani opted for a space where drag queens and other makeup enthusiasts could get ready for a night out on the town.
“We ripped out the closet and made that space the whole getting ready and glam area, so the bathroom didn’t have to be where you are setting all of your makeup down,” Dani says. “This really let us focus on the functionality of the bathroom instead.”
Among her many brilliant motel room design ideas, Dani used a floating vanity with vessel sinks in the bathrooms to conserve space while achieving a stylish yet practical feel. Alongside repurposed tile and sleek, brass fixtures, these spaces make for the perfect place to freshen up.
Today, a stay at the Trixie Motel will launch you into another world filled with electrifying details and color palettes. As you glance over the statement pieces and intentional elements, you’re able to see just how much love and labor went into creating a space such as this. Inspiring to all who love bold, eclectic design, the Trixie Motel serves as more than just a backdrop for viral selfies and content creation.
Additionally, this show is the first of its kind. Marrying design and drag has never been done to this scale before, and it proves that there is a demand for this art form on and off the lip-syncing stage.
“Drag shows don’t always have to be some sort of competition,” Dani says. “Drag can be applied to so many things. It makes everything so much more fun, playful, and beautiful. This show is the most unlikely but amazing blend of two genres, and it really opens the door to what home renovation shows could be like in the future.”
