Actors Zosia Mamet and Evan Jonigkeit left the city life in Manhattan to lay roots in beautiful Hudson Valley, New York. By choosing a rustic house and mixing in their favorite decor, the couple created a dream home that stayed true to their style while retaining its original charm.

To learn more about their renovation process and experience, we had the opportunity to speak with the couple about their rustic dream home:

Tell us a little about your home revamp. What did you want to achieve with it?

The original structure of the house is a Sears catalog cabin from the 1920s. Since then, there were two additions put onto the home. We wanted to make the house feel cohesive and efficient and put our sense of style throughout. We also wanted to add a bit of a modern flair while keeping the integrity of the home's rustic beginnings.

What was the method behind the design?

We definitely wanted to keep a cohesive feel throughout the house while also making each space have a little bit of its own magic. The kitchen was the main impetus for the renovation, so it was super important that everything feel special and also efficient.

It is one of our favorite rooms in the house and definitely one we spend a ton of time in. We entertain a lot, having friends and family come to visit constantly. So we wanted the kitchen to be a spot that everyone was comfortable spending time in. We adore how the space turned out.

What does the process look like for a big project like this? Do you have any favorite products or looks from this renovation?

The process was most definitely long and full of an obscene amount of decisions from picking paint color to what type of shower drain we wanted. But it was a joy because we were getting to build our dream home and make choices that we knew we’d be living with and loving for years to come.

Our tub is a favorite. We took our time making each and every decision and we couldn’t be happier with how everything turned out from the floors to the light fixtures. The farmhouse sink is one of our favorite things in the house.

The bath in the downstairs bathroom is another favorite space for us. We even have a name for the time we spend in there: “tubby time.” We wanted each bathroom to feel clean and modern but also comfortable and inviting.

What are the most important things to consider when redesigning a bathroom?

Something we thought a lot about was how to most efficiently use the space. Particularly in our [primary] bathroom, which had been a bit of an odd shape before.

We squared off some walls which technically made the bathroom square footage a bit smaller but in truth makes it feel so much bigger because every square inch of space is utilized and the lines are clean.

I think it’s important to think about how you use your bathroom. Where you like to grab for your towel when you get out of the shower, how much storage space you need, is a Jack and Jill better for you or is it not necessary. Once you hone in on that, then the aesthetic choices are just the fun part.

What are the most important things to consider when redesigning a kitchen?

I would echo the same sentiments for designing a kitchen as for a bathroom. Think about how you like to use your space. We like to entertain a lot and as the old adage goes, everyone always ends up in the kitchen at a party.

Our kitchen before was incredibly small and could barely fit two people in it. We knew we wanted to create a space where two people could be cooking and people could be hanging out and chatting all at the same time.

We wanted the kitchen to also feel open to the living room and kitchen nook spaces that are open to it. So an open plan with a lot of comfy space was our main mission when designing our kitchen.

What is your Signature style?

I think the whole house is our signature style, which is a mixture of a bit of modern with a nod to our home’s rustic roots. We want things to feel clean and efficient while also feeling cozy and warm.
