When
selecting lighting for your interior space there are two
factors to consider: task illumination and aesthetic design.
Below are guidelines for several types of fixtures.
|
|
Chandeliers: The
chandelier is the centerpiece of dining decor. The fixture
needs to provide adequate lighting for the space and match
the character & design of the room. The minimum diameter
of the chandelier should be half the width of your dining
table. The fixture should hang 30" to 32" above
the tabletop.
Bathroom
Lighting: Bath/Vanity lighting can range from single
sconces to extended row lighting. Above mirror lighting
should be centered over the sink to avoid shadowing on
your face. In bathrooms with dual sinks center a light
over each sink. Fixtures mounted on either side of the
sink should be secured 30 inches apart to avoid shadows
and 65 to 70 inches above the floor.
Task
Lighting: Task lighting is generally for tabletop surfaces
such as a work station or kitchen counter. Pendant lights
are an attractive solution for small table lighting. They
should be mounted 30" to 36" above the table's
surface. A row of pendant lights with down turned shades
can be an attractive and practical solution to kitchen
island lighting.
Outdoor
Lighting: Exterior lighting can enhance your home's
curb appeal as well as increase its security. The most
important concept in outdoor lighting is matching the size
of your light fixture with the size of the home. For example,
a grand entrance should be well lit, but a cozy cottage
should not be dwarfed by glaring lights. View your home
from the street to get a accurate idea of the proper size
light. Take into consideration low hanging foliage or any
landscaping vegetation that could obscure your visitors'
path at night.
