From Wood to Stone

Wood becomes petrified through the process of permineralization, a type of fossilization. This process replaces all organic materials with minerals, while retaining the original structure. So, details such as tree rings, scales and striations remain. This process ensures that no two petrified wood pieces are alike, each varying in size, color, shape and detail.

Petrification begins when a tree falls and is covered completely by mud, water and sediments. Having no oxygen, the tree begins to decay, allowing water and mud to seep into the cavities. Minerals left behind by the water and mud replace the wood and any moisture evaporates leaving only the rare and beautiful petrified wood behind. The minerals left behind determine the colors of the petrified wood.

Petrified wood is renown for its beautiful colors and intricate details. Our petrified wood is harvested in an area rich in iron oxides, manganese, manganese oxides and carbon. The result is unique pieces of petrified wood with varying shades of yellows, reds, browns, oranges and blacks.

Caring for Petrified Wood

Petrified wood is easy to clean and maintain. You can prevent hard water deposits from developing by cleaning regularly with a granite and marble cleaner, such as StoneTech Revitalizer Cleaner & Protector. Refrain from using acidic household cleaners, wipes with harsh chemicals, or abrasive cleaners, as these will damage stone. To retain your petrified wood's natural shine, reseal it once or twice a year with a product such as StoneTech Heavy Duty Sealer. If staining occurs, use a standard stone and tile stain remover. For more difficult stains, apply a poultice product from StoneTech directly to the stain.
