How to Determine Handing
You may have heard the term "door handing" when shopping for door sets or handle levers for cabinets. Handing refers to the side to which the door opens and the hinges are located. There are four basic types of door handing: left handing, right handing, left-reverse handing and right-reverse handing.
To determine the handing of your door, stand on the outside of it, where you would insert the key. If the door opens inwardly (away from you) and to the left, then it has left handing. If the door opens inwardly to the right, it has right handing.
Reverse handing refers to an outwardly swinging door. So if the door opens toward you and to the left, it has left-reverse handing. If the door opens toward you and to the right, it has right-reverse handing. Interior door sets, entrance door sets, and cabinet and drawer hardware will list handing when necessary.
